New Holland L234 Instrument Cluster Blank, Engine Runs

Fault Codes & Symptoms

No active codes

Instrument cluster screen is blank or inoperative. Related symptoms: - Loss of communication with other modules. - Multiple communication fault codes (if a scan tool is used). - Erratic operation of other electronic functions. The operator reports the main display screen is black, but the machine will start and run. Unable to see any machine parameters, hours, or warnings.

Verified Repair

Confirmed cause: A terminating resistor, located in a separate harness connector, was found to be damaged from corrosion. Repair performed: Replaced the faulty terminating resistor and cleaned the harness connector terminals. Verification: With the new resistor installed, the CAN bus resistance measured within specification at the cluster connector. Upon reconnecting the battery and turning the key to the 'ON' position, the instrument cluster powered up normally and displayed all expected machine information. Technician notes: - A resistance reading that is double the specification on a CAN bus test is a classic indicator of a missing terminating resistor. - On many models, one resistor is internal to a controller, and the other is a separate, plug-in component in the main harness. Its location can vary. - Always disconnect the battery before measuring resistance on CAN circuits to prevent damage to the multimeter and vehicle electronics.
