Merlo ROTO 40.26 Fails to Recognize Attachments
Fault Codes & Symptoms
Attachment not recognized by safety system; hydraulic functions disabled. Related symptoms: - Intermittent loss of attachment recognition. - Incorrect attachment type displayed. - Inability to use certain hydraulic functions that depend on attachment type. The machine will not operate any attachment. The display shows that no attachment is connected, even when one is physically and correctly coupled.
Confirmed cause: Internal short-to-ground within the main boom wiring harness. One of the attachment recognition wires had chafed through its insulation where the harness was secured by a P-clamp near the base of the first boom section. Repair performed: The damaged section of the wiring harness was inaccessible for a simple splice repair. The entire boom harness assembly was replaced. The new harness was carefully routed and secured to prevent future chafing. Verification: After harness replacement, the jumper test was performed again at the boom head. The machine immediately recognized the simulated attachment. The machine was then connected to several physical attachments (forks, bucket), and all were correctly identified, enabling full hydraulic operation. Technician notes: - The fault location was difficult to access and required partial disassembly of the boom to pinpoint. - This failure mode did not generate a fault code, which delayed diagnosis. It presented as a simple open circuit. - When replacing harnesses, pay close attention to routing and clearance, especially at points where the boom sections telescope or pivot.
