Case 580SN Loader Lift Cylinder Leaking After Reseal

Fault Codes & Symptoms

No active codes

Hydraulic oil leaking from loader lift cylinder rod seal Related symptoms: - Repeated seal failure on the same cylinder - Short service life of new cylinder seals - Oil film on cylinder rod The left side loader lift cylinder was resealed by the customer twice but started leaking again within a few hours of use. The cylinder continues to leak from the rod seal.

Verified Repair

Confirmed cause: A sharp metal burr on the inside diameter of the cylinder gland was cutting the rod seal during operation. Repair performed: The burr was carefully removed from the cylinder gland using a fine-grit die grinder bit, followed by smoothing with emery cloth. The gland was thoroughly cleaned to remove all metal particles. A new OEM seal kit was installed, and the cylinder was reassembled. Verification: The loader was operated for over an hour, lifting and holding loads to fully cycle the cylinder under pressure. A close inspection confirmed the cylinder rod and seal area remained completely dry. Technician notes: - This type of failure is easy to miss. Always run a finger or a shop rag around the inside of the gland to check for burrs before installing seals. - The burr was likely a manufacturing defect that only became an issue after the original seals wore out. - Using a seal installation tool or a piece of thin plastic shim can help protect the new seal as it passes over the gland threads during assembly.
