Snorkel S3219E Line Contactor Chatters, Will Not Drive

Fault Codes & Symptoms

No active codes

Line contactor chatters or cycles rapidly when drive is enabled. Related symptoms: - Sluggish drive/lift performance - Machine moves erratically or cuts out - Battery pack requires frequent charging - No-start condition The machine makes a loud buzzing or clicking noise when you try to drive it, and it moves erratically or not at all.

Verified Repair

Confirmed cause: One of the deep-cycle batteries had an internal failure and could not sustain a load. Repair performed: Replaced all batteries as a matched set. Cleaned all cable terminals and applied a corrosion inhibitor before reinstallation. Verification: With the new battery set installed, the line contactor closed firmly with a single, solid "clunk" when drive was selected. The machine could drive and steer smoothly in both directions. A final load test on the new pack showed minimal voltage drop under load. Technician notes: - When one battery in a series pack fails a load test, it is best practice to replace all batteries in the pack. The old batteries have a different capacity and internal resistance than a new one, and mixing them can lead to charging imbalances and premature failure of the new battery. - A chattering contactor is almost always a sign of a voltage supply problem to its coil. This can be from the power source itself (batteries) or high resistance in the circuit feeding the contactor or controller.
