Develon DX140LCR-7 Engine Surges at Mid-Throttle
Fault Codes & Symptoms
Engine surging Related symptoms: - Hesitation when accelerating. - Unstable engine RPM at a fixed throttle setting. The operator reports that the engine speed hunts up and down continuously when holding the throttle in the mid-range. The issue is less noticeable at low or high idle.
Confirmed cause: Defective accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor. The internal wiper or resistive track was worn, causing an unstable and noisy voltage signal at mid-range positions. Repair performed: Replaced the accelerator pedal position sensor assembly (throttle dial) located in the cab. No wiring repairs were necessary. Verification: After replacement, the engine was started and the throttle was slowly swept from low to high idle multiple times. The engine RPM followed the dial position smoothly with no surging or hunting at any point. Scan tool data confirmed the APP sensor signal was now stable and linear through its entire range of motion. Technician notes: - This fault is difficult to diagnose without a scan tool to monitor live data. The symptom mimics a fuel delivery problem, which can lead to unnecessary replacement of fuel system components. - It's important to check the sensor signal through its full range of travel. In this case, the instability was only present in the middle third of the sensor's range. - Always confirm the fix by comparing the "before" and "after" live data readings if possible.
