JCB 540-180 Exhaust Smell in Cab and Soot at Joint

Fault Codes & Symptoms

No active codes

Exhaust smell in cab Related symptoms: - Increased engine vibration felt in the cab. - Unusual noises during engine start-up or shutdown. The operator smells exhaust fumes in the cab, especially when the machine is stationary with the engine running.

Verified Repair

Confirmed cause: Failed rear engine mount causing excessive vibration, leading to stress and cracking of the exhaust flex pipe. Repair performed: Replaced the failed rear engine mount. Replaced the cracked exhaust flex pipe with a new gasket and clamps. Verification: Started the engine and allowed it to run up to operating temperature. Visually and audibly inspected the new flex pipe joint; no leaks were present. Revved the engine and observed significantly less movement than before. Operated the machine, and the exhaust smell in the cab was eliminated. Technician notes: - This is a good example of a consequential failure. The visible problem (cracked flex pipe) was caused by a less obvious root cause (failed engine mount). - Always check engine and transmission mounts when diagnosing failures in flexible joints, hoses, or driveshafts. - The soot trail was the primary clue, but checking for the actual source of the leak with the engine running is necessary to confirm.
