JLG G5-18A Cranks But Will Not Start, Requires Shifting to Neutral Twice
Fault Codes & Symptoms
Cranks, No Start Related symptoms: - Intermittent no-crank condition. - Machine may unexpectedly shut down if the neutral signal is lost while operating at idle in neutral. The engine will crank but will not start. The operator noted that if they shift from neutral to a gear and back to neutral again, the machine will then start normally.
Confirmed cause: Defective neutral safety switch. The switch contacts were worn, providing an inconsistent signal to the machine controller. Repair performed: Replaced the neutral safety switch on the transmission. Ensured the new switch was correctly adjusted and the electrical connector was secure. Verification: Verified that the engine now starts reliably on the first attempt with the transmission in neutral. Tested starting in forward and reverse to confirm the machine will not crank while in gear. Technician notes: - This machine uses a separate neutral signal path for the starter relay and the engine controller start logic. - The intermittent nature of the fault was key. Wiggling the shifter sometimes had the same effect as cycling it. - Always confirm the machine will not crank while in gear after replacing a neutral safety switch.
