Genie GTH-5519 Joystick Sluggish, CAN Fault Code
Fault Codes & Symptoms
Boom and tilt functions sluggish, followed by a fault code. Related symptoms: - Erratic or non-functional controls. - Multiple CAN-related fault codes. - Communication errors with diagnostic software. Operator reported that boom and tilt functions became very slow and jerky. After a few minutes, a fault code appeared on the dash and all functions stopped.
Confirmed cause: The main CAN bus terminating resistor was missing from the harness. Repair performed: Installed a new terminating resistor, with the correct resistance value per the manufacturer's specification, into the harness connector. Verification: After installing the resistor, the CAN bus resistance measured within specification. Started the machine and all joystick functions operated correctly with normal speed and control. No fault codes returned after a function test. Technician notes: - The sluggish operation before the hard fault was likely due to corrupted CAN messages caused by the improper bus termination. - The missing resistor was located near the main hydraulic valve bank. It may have been dislodged during a previous repair or pressure washing. - Always check CAN bus resistance first. A reading well outside of the manufacturer's specification often points to a terminating resistor or harness issue.
