Excavator Alternator Not Charging After Pressure Wash
Fault Codes & Symptoms
Charge warning light on, battery not charging Related symptoms: - Flickering charge light - Intermittent charging The battery light came on right after we washed the machine. The machine runs fine but the light stays on.
Confirmed cause: Water intrusion in the multi-pin connector for the alternator excitation and warning light circuits caused a poor connection. Repair performed: The connector was disconnected and thoroughly dried out using compressed air. The pins were cleaned with a small wire brush and electronic contact cleaner was applied before reconnecting. The connector seal was inspected and found to be in good condition. Verification: Started the engine and observed the charge warning light went out. Measured voltage at the battery terminals with the engine at high idle, which now read within the manufacturer's specification, confirming the alternator was charging correctly. Technician notes: - Pressure washing engine components, especially electrical parts like the alternator and starter, can force water past seals that are not designed to withstand high pressure. - Always advise customers to use lower pressure or to cover sensitive electrical components before washing. - A quick check of connectors is a good first step for any electrical fault that appears after a wash.
