Mecalac MWR Tiltrotator Functions Erratic or Unresponsive
Fault Codes & Symptoms
Tiltrotator functions are erratic, delayed, or unresponsive. Related symptoms: - Uncommanded attachment movement. - Delay in attachment response. - Complete loss of specific attachment functions. - Intermittent communication fault codes. Operator reports the tiltrotator randomly stops working or moves unpredictably. Sometimes it works fine for a few minutes after startup, then acts up.
Confirmed cause: One of the termination resistors on the attachment CAN bus harness was failing internally. It would lose its correct resistance value as it warmed up, corrupting the communication signals between the control modules. Repair performed: Replaced the faulty CAN bus termination resistor. Secured the harness and connectors. Verification: Operated all tiltrotator functions repeatedly for an extended period. The machine was placed in a working scenario, and all movements were smooth, responsive, and free of the previous erratic behavior. CAN bus resistance was re-checked and confirmed to be stable and within the manufacturer's specification. Technician notes: - This was a time-consuming diagnosis. The lack of fault codes was a key clue that this was likely a network or signal integrity issue, not a component failure that the system could directly identify. - The problem was temperature-sensitive, which made it harder to replicate consistently. A heat gun can sometimes be used to carefully warm components like resistors or modules to expose thermal failures. - Measuring CAN resistance is a fundamental check that should be performed early when control system issues are suspected.
