Hitachi ZX85USB-6 Boom and Arm Inoperative, Swing OK
Fault Codes & Symptoms
Boom and arm functions are completely inoperative. Related symptoms: - No response from any function controlled by one joystick. - Intermittent loss of pilot controls. - Inability to unlock hydraulic controls. The operator reports that the boom and arm functions suddenly stopped working. The swing function and travel motors operate normally.
Confirmed cause: The retaining pin for the pilot shut-off solenoid linkage had fallen out, disconnecting the solenoid from the valve spool it controls. The spool remained in the closed position, blocking pilot oil flow to the right joystick. Repair performed: Fabricated and installed a new retaining pin and cotter pin to secure the pilot shut-off solenoid linkage to the valve spool. Verification: After the repair, lowered the safety lever and actuated the right joystick. All boom and arm functions were restored and operated smoothly with normal speed and power. Technician notes: - The pilot shut-off solenoid is a common point of failure, but a mechanical linkage failure is less common and can be easily missed if the focus is purely on electrical or hydraulic pressure testing. - This failure mode can be confusing because the machine monitor shows the system is active, and the solenoid itself tests as electrically sound. - Always physically verify the mechanical movement of linkages connected to solenoids, not just the electrical state.
