Gehl V270 Slow Crank When Engine is Hot
Fault Codes & Symptoms
Slow engine cranking when hot Related symptoms: - Starter motor feels excessively hot to the touch after a failed crank attempt - Slight burning smell near starter after prolonged cranking - Intermittent no-crank condition The machine starts fine in the morning, but after running for an hour or two, if you shut it down, it barely turns over. You have to let it cool off for a long time before it will restart.
Confirmed cause: Starter motor windings developing high internal resistance when hot. Repair performed: Replaced the starter motor. Cleaned all cable mounting points at the starter as part of the procedure. Verification: After installation of the new starter, the engine was brought to full operating temperature. The engine was shut down and restarted multiple times. Each time, it cranked at a normal speed and started immediately. Technician notes: - This type of failure can be tricky because the system appears fine when tested cold. - Always perform voltage drop tests when the symptom is present - in this case, when the machine is hot. - A clamp-on ammeter is a great tool for this diagnosis to directly measure the excessive current draw during the fault.
