Gehl R260 Low Power and Whistling Noise Under Load

Fault Codes & Symptoms

No active codes

Low power with audible whistle under load Related symptoms: - Increased black smoke under load - Higher than normal exhaust gas temperatures (if monitored) - Reduced fuel efficiency The machine feels weak when lifting a full bucket or driving up a grade. It also makes a high-pitched whistling sound when the engine is working hard.

Verified Repair

Confirmed cause: A loose clamp on the hose between the turbocharger compressor outlet and the charge air cooler inlet. Repair performed: The connection was cleaned of all oil residue. The hose was re-seated and the original clamp was replaced with a new one. The new clamp was torqued to the manufacturer's specification. Verification: The charge air system was pressurized again and no leaks were found. A functional test was performed by operating the machine under a heavy load. The whistling noise was gone, and full power was restored. Technician notes: - This is a common failure point. The constant vibration and heat cycles can cause clamps to lose tension over time. - Even a small boost leak can cause significant power loss and may not always be obvious without pressurizing the system. - Oily residue around a charge air connection is a tell-tale sign of a boost leak, as small amounts of engine oil vapor are normal in the intake tract.
