Excavator Shows Multiple Unrelated Fault Codes

Fault Codes & Symptoms

No active codes

Multiple active fault codes across different systems. Related symptoms: - Intermittent loss of specific functions. - Warning lights for multiple systems. - Display panel showing dashes or communication errors. The machine display is lit up with error codes, but the machine seems to be operating, although some functions are sluggish.

Verified Repair

Confirmed cause: A primary CAN bus backbone connector, located under the cab floor, was found to have water intrusion and significant pin corrosion. The connector housing seal was compromised, allowing moisture to enter and disrupt network communications. Repair performed: The damaged connector was removed, and the affected harness section was repaired by splicing in new sealed connectors. The harness was re-routed slightly to prevent water from pooling near the connection in the future. Verification: After the repair, CAN bus resistance measured stable and within the manufacturer's specification. All control units were reconnected. The system was powered on, and all previously active fault codes were cleared and did not return after an extended operational test. Technician notes: - This fault can mimic a failed ECU, but the unstable resistance reading is the key clue. - When an entire network is down, checking bus resistance is a primary diagnostic step. - Always check common harness junction points in harsh environments, especially under the cab or near chassis flex points.
