Telehandler Intermittent Remote Control Failure
Fault Codes & Symptoms
Loss of remote control functions Related symptoms: - Erratic operation of other CAN-based components. - Spurious fault codes from unrelated controllers. - Difficulty connecting with diagnostic software. The radio remote control stops working randomly. Sometimes it will work for an hour, other times only for a few minutes. We have to shut the machine down and restart to get it to link again.
Confirmed cause: Corrosion within a CAN bus T-connector for the outrigger module caused intermittent loss of network integrity, which disrupted communication with the radio remote receiver. Repair performed: Replaced the corroded CAN bus T-connector and the short harness pigtail connecting it. The pins in the outrigger controller were cleaned and treated with a contact protectant before reconnection. Verification: Operated the machine extensively using the remote control for several hours, including all functions and significant machine movement. The remote control link remained stable with no dropouts. Technician notes: - A resistance reading that is double the expected value can be misleading. It indicates an open circuit, but not necessarily a failed terminating resistor. Always suspect a harness or connector issue first. - Intermittent CAN bus issues are often found at connectors exposed to weather, washing, or vibration. Start inspections at the lowest or most exposed points of the harness. - When the remote drops out, the machine defaults to a safe state, which may include stopping engine and hydraulic functions. This is normal behavior.
