Genie S-80 Loss of Drive Function and Brake Release Diagnostics

The machine engine revs up when drive is initiated, but wheels lock up or do not turn, accompanied by standard drive function hydraulic squeal.
Symptoms
- Drive pumps lock up instantly or machine will not drive in forward/reverse
- High-pitched screech from primary hydraulic relief when drive function is requested
- Drive function disabled completely while steering and boom functions remain fully operational
Possible Causes
- Drive brake release pressure-reducing valve is out of adjustment or failed
- Hydraulic parking brake release manual bypass valve in open position
- Worn multi-disc brake friction plates binding internally within the hub assemblies
- Low drive loop charge-pump pressure preventing mechanical brake release
Diagnostic Procedure
- 1Verify Brake Sump Release Pressure Bypass StateGo to the ground engine compartment. Locate the manual brake release hand pump manifold. Ensure the manual release valve needle screw is fully shut (turned clockwise) to allow normal dynamic pressure buildup to release the hub brakes.
- 2Check Charge Pump System PressureInstall a 1000 PSI pressure gauge on the drive pump charge pressure test port. Start the engine and run at high idle. Observe the charge pressure; it should read between 280 to 320 PSI. If charge pressure is critically low, the brakes will not compress their internal release springs.
- 3Measure Dynamic Brake Release PressureTee a pressure gauge directly into the line feeding the wheel hub brake release port. Engage the drive joystick briefly at low idle. The gauge must jump instantly to a minimum of 250-280 PSI to compress the brake release springs. If pressure index is low, inspect the brake release solenoid valve (BS1) for blockage.
- 4Perform Brake Hub Leakage Isolation TestIsolate which wheel hub is experiencing internal seal bypassing. Disconnect the return line from each brake port one at a time and apply pressure. If significant oil continuously bypasses out of a specific port when pressurized, the internal piston O-rings are blown, preventing that brake from releasing.

- Replacement of internal brake piston seals on the drive hubs
- Setting or replacing the brake release manifold pressure valve
- Repair or replacement of the hydrostatic drive charge pump
