Takeuchi TB290 — Boom and Arm Cylinder Hydraulic Drift Troubleshooting

The boom or main excavator arm slowly lowers and wanders downward under normal loading cycles when control valves are held in neutral.

Symptoms

  • Elevated bucket loses height rapidly (exceeds OEM specification of less than 2 inches in 10 minutes)
  • Loader or excavating attachments show drift under heavy static load conditions
  • Whistling or oil-bypassing hiss from the main hydraulic block during hold positions

Possible Causes

  • Failed piston seal rings within the boom or arm hydraulic cylinders
  • Internal slide bypass in the primary hydraulic valve block spool paths
  • Debris or worn seat in the secondary overload relief/holding valves

Diagnostic Procedure

    Raise the boom to full height and shut off the engine. Block the mechanical link safely. Crack structural connection feed lines, observing whether the cylinder drifts independently once lines are completely blocked/valved out.
