Bobcat T86 Main Power Accessory Relay and Electrical No-Power Diagnostic

The Bobcat T86 loses all cab power. Turning the key or pressing the panel button does not illuminate the instrument screens or charge the accessory circuits. The machine appears completely dead.

Symptoms

  • Completely dark cabin cluster with no activity when the key is turned
  • Intermittent cabin power loss when operating on rough ground
  • No engine crank response, even though the battery is fully charged

Possible Causes

  • Loose or corroded primary ground cables at the engine frame post
  • Failed main power relay or master accessory contactor switch
  • Blown 100-Amp MIDI fuse located in the high-current distribution box

Diagnostic Procedure

    Perform Engine Battery Load Test
    Open the rear battery door compartment. Tighten the battery cable clamps. Use a digital battery load tester to verify the battery is healthy and reads above 12.6V under load. Clean off any battery terminal sulfuric deposits.

    Check Main Engine Ground Connections
    Trace the thick negative ground cable from the battery to where it connects to the engine block starter mounting frame. Clean and polish the terminal lug with a wire brush, and verify that the mounting bolt is securely tightened.

    Test 100A MIDI Distribution Fuses
    Locate the main electrical distribution block containing the high-current MIDI flat fuses inside the engine compartment. Using a test light or multimeter, verify battery voltage is present on both sides of each fuse. A blown fuse indicates a major short circuit.

    Evaluate Main Accessory Relay Performance
    Locate the master accessory power relay inside the cab fuse box panel. Switch the ignition on. Check for control voltage at the relay coil terminals. If control voltage is present but the relay fails to close and deliver battery power to the accessory bus, replace the relay.
