JCB 426 ZX Wheel Loader Hydraulic Low Brake Pressure Warning Diagnostic

Symptoms

• Low Brake Pressure dashboard light illuminated constantly
• Brake pedal feels spongy and requires double-pumping to engage full stops
• Constant high-volume air alert horn in cabin
• Frequent clicking sounds from the brake accumulator charge valve

Possible Causes

• Loss of nitrogen gas pre-charge pressure inside the brake hydraulic accumulators
• Failing hydraulic brake charge valve that fails to cut-in or cut-out properly
• Worn internal teeth in the primary auxiliary gear charge pump
• Blown accumulator bladder seal causing fluid bypass mixture

Diagnostic Procedure

   Install System Brake Pressure Test Gauges

   Locate the brake pressure diagnostic test points on the bulkhead under the loader frame. Connect a 0-250 bar (0-3625 PSI) hydraulic test pressure gauge to the accumulator circuit test port.

   Check Accumulator Charge Cycle Pressures

   Start the engine and run at 1500 RPM. Observe pressure gauge limits. Note the cut-out pressure (where the pump unloads, spec is typically 150 bar) and then pump the brakes slowly until system pressure drops to cut-in point (typically 120 bar). Replace charge valve if pressure cycle ranges are wrong.

   Perform Accumulator Gas Pre-Charge Check

   Shut down the engine. Slowly pump fuel/brake pedals 50-60 times to deplete store pressure. Observe the pressure gauge; it will drop slowly then fall directly to zero zero. The point of sudden drop is the gas pre-charge point (should read around 60-70 bar). Immediate drop to zero indicators complete bladder rupture.

   Test Brake Piston Seals for High Fluid Bypass

   With accumulator fully pressurized and engine shut down, apply and hold the foot brakes down firmly. If pressure decays rapidly (more than 10 bar in 2 minutes), oil is getting passed the internal brake-piston seals in the axles.

• Replacing the nitrogen-charged brake accumulator cylinders
• Overhauling or replacing the primary hydraulic brake charge control valve
• Replacing the worn axle internal multi-plate brake sealing rings

• Nitrogen accumulators are under extremely high pressure; never attempt to disassemble pressurized components
• Utilize high pressure, clean dry nitrogen only if charging/adjusting pre-pressures
