JCB 3CX EcoMAX Engine No Load High Blowby Diagnostic

Symptoms

• Thick grey-white smoke escaping consistently from the under-engine breather pipe
• Rapid drop in crankcase engine oil level without visual external leaks
• Oil pooling in the air intake compressor tubes or intercooler pipes
• Decreased engine cold-starting compression performance

Possible Causes

• Failed Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) filter element causing oil carryover
• Excessive cylinder wall scoring or stuck piston compression rings
• Leaking variable geometry turbocharger compressor oil shaft seal
• Worn engine valve guides and valve stem seals

Diagnostic Procedure

   Inspect and Replace crankcase ventilation (CCV) cartridge

   Locate the round housing holding the CCV coalescer element on top of the valve cover. Remove the lid and inspect the filter element. If media is heavily saturated or plugged with sludge, the design cannot drain; replace this filter element.

   Perform Crankcase Pressure Water-Manometer Test

   Run the engine up to operating temperature. Connect a water manometer or very low-pressure gauge to the engine oil dipstick tube with a secure rubber adaptor. Measure crankcase pressure while running at full speed. Correct pressure should read under 50mm of water; high positive pressure indicates compression blowby past pistons.

   Inspect Turbocharger Compressor Ducting for Wet Spots

   Loosen the clean-side air delivery hose clamps on the turbocharger cylinder housing inlet. Check inside for black pools of motor oil. Push pull the turbo spinner shaft to test for shaft tolerance play; play above specs results in oil pull path through induction tracks.

   Perform Engine Cylinder Leakdown compression tests

   If high crankcase pressure is verified, pull the injector clamp rings, remove the injector tips, and slide adapter into plug wells. Run a standard compression leakdown test to confirm which engine cylinders are leaking pressure past worn piston rings.

• Replacing the Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) filter assembly module
• Overhauling the turbocharger core or replacing complete turbocharger cart
• Engine block cylinder re-boring with new piston rings and connecting bearings
