JCB JS220 DPF Regeneration and Exhaust Gas Aftertreatment Troubleshooting

The excavator loses power, displays soot level high warnings, and fails to initiate automatic regeneration of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Engine enters a partial derate mode.

Symptoms

  • Red DPF warning and soot level percentage flashing on the instrument panel
  • Frequent 'Engine Derated' notifications with reduced performance
  • White or dark smoke emitted during attempting regen cycles
  • Active manual/parked regeneration fails to start

Possible Causes

  • Failed DPF temperature or differential exhaust pressure sensor
  • Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve sticking or carboned up
  • Soot sensor or wiring harness damaged by extreme heat
  • Fuel injector 'dribble' preventing the exhaust temp from hitting light-off thresholds

Diagnostic Procedure

    Retrieve DTC Error Codes and Connect ServiceMaster
    Connect a laptop running JCB ServiceMaster software to the excavator's diagnostic port located on the side panel. Extract all live active and inactive diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), focusing on codes related to high soot load or DPF temperature sensors.

    Verify Heat and Exhaust Temp Sensor Output
    Under live diagnostics, monitor DPF inlet and outlet temperature sensor signals. Ensure readings start at ambient on cold startup and rise linearly. If a sensor reports a static -40°C or 1000°C, replace the faulty thermocouple sensor.

    Inspect Differential Pressure Sensor Lines
    Inspect the metal and rubber pressure differential gauge lines routing from the exhaust pipe to the soot pressure sensor. Look for carbon deposits blocking these lines or cracking/burns in the rubber section. Hose restrictions cause incorrect soot-load readings.

    Check EGR Valve Position Feedback
    Verify that the EGR valve is not carbonated and stuck open. Monitor EGR target versus actual position in the live data field. A stuck valve will disrupt exhaust temperature generation required for passive or active DPF burns.

    Perform a Forced Parked Regeneration
    After addressing sensor failures, command a forced parked regeneration via JCB ServiceMaster. Observe catalyst inlet temperature rising past 550°C. If temperatures cannot reach ignition threshold, check HC doser fuel lines and the exhaust throttle valve operation.

  • Replacing the DPF Exhaust Temperature Sensors (Inlet/Outlet)
  • Cleaning or replacing blocked DPF differential pressure sensor tubes
  • Performing professional high-temperature offsite baking of the DPF core, or replacing of the DPF core

Safety Precautions

  • Perform manual regeneration in an open, well-ventilated location away from dry brush or flammable materials
  • Do not touch exhaust components or DPF casing during or immediately after diagnostics; temperatures reach over 600°C
  • Wear appropriate high-temperature safety gloves and clothing

  • Infrared/Laser Pyrometer (up to 700°C)
  • Hand vacuum pump and pressure tester for differential sensors
