JCB JS220 High Pressure Common Rail Engine Stalling Under Load
JCB·JS220·JCB EcoMAX 4.8L·Advanced·2-4 hours·0 views
The engine starts and runs fine in idle, but stalls, bogs down heavily, or exhibits sudden cylinder sputtering when the excavator enters high hydraulic power stalls (heavy bucket curling or hard trenching).
Symptoms
- Engine shuts off completely when cylinder load is held to maximum block pressure
- Difficult or rough starting when the engine is warm/hot
- Low fuel pressure fault alerts appear on the dashboard HUD panel
- Pronounced black exhaust soot upon engine recovery
Possible Causes
- Highly-restricted primary fuel pre-filter or secondary filter cartridge
- Faulty Fuel Suction Control Valve (SCV) on the primary fuel pump
- Worn high-pressure fuel injectors returning too much fuel back to tank
- Defective fuel common rail pressure transducer sensor writing untrue signals
Diagnostic Procedure
- 1Analyze Live Fuel Pressures via ServiceMasterConnect JCB ServiceMaster, open live-data, and select fuel rail pressure (target versus actual) alongside engine load rate. Run engine up to max load. If target pressure rises to 1600 bar but actual rail pressure drops below 1100 bar, a physical fuel delivery limitation exists.
- 2Perform Low-Pressure Supply Circuit AssessmentInstall a 0-10 bar (0-145 PSI) low pressure gauge on the mechanical lift pump filter-head supply circuit. Ensure lift pressure stays above 3.5 bar under engine load. Clean the water separator bowl and replace any restricted filters if pressure is low.
- 3Inspect and Clean the Suction Control Valve (SCV)Locate the SCV on the high-pressure fuel pump body. Remove the connector plug and test coil internal resistance (standard: 1.8 - 2.5 ohms). Remove the SCV cartridge and inspect for scoring, debris, or spring breakage that might restrict fluid metering.
- 4Execute Injector Fuel Return Back-Leakage TestPerform an injector fuel leakback test. Disconnect the return lines of the four fuel injectors and direct each lines into graduated glass cylinders. Crank or run engine for exactly 1 minute. An injector outputting high back-leakage volume must be replaced as it drops rail reserve.
Common Repairs
- Replacing the Fuel Suction Control Valve (SCV) cartridge unit
- Replacing a worn or failing high-pressure engine common-rail pump
- Replacing worn common rail electronic fuel injectors
Safety Precautions
- High pressure diesel (over 1500 bar) will readily penetrate human skin; never crack common rail tubes or fittings while engines run
- Always wait at least 5 minutes after engine shut down before working on common rail circuits to let built pressure drop to zero
- Store fuel leak-test cylinders in secure, non-tip frame holding trays
Required Tools
- JCB ServiceMaster program kit
- Fuel injector flow injector leak-back kit
- Low-pressure diesel fuel test gauges
- Assorted metric flared fuel line sockets
