JLG 600AJ Charging System Failure and Low Voltage Faults

Symptoms

• Battery charge indicator warning light remains illuminated on the Ground Console panel
• Control system resets when multiple high-amperage solenoid valves are operated simultaneously
• Frequent system shutdown with communication failure codes (ADE system glitching)
• Starter motor turns sluggishly or clicks without turning the engine over

Possible Causes

• Slipping, cracked, or misaligned alternator drive belt
• Failed alternator internal diode assembly or worn carbon voltage regulator brushes
• Corroded main battery disconnect switch contacts adding high circuit resistance
• Damaged sense/excitation wire in the alternator charge harness

Diagnostic Procedure

   Check Static and Operating Battery Voltage

   Measure battery voltage across terminals at rest (expected: 12.6V). Start the engine and measure voltage at 1500 RPM. The voltage should rise to 13.8V - 14.4V DC. If it remains at or below resting level, diagnostic must focus on alternator output.

   Perform Engine Belt Tension and Slip Check

   Inspect the direct poly-V belt. Check for correct tension (about 1/2 inch of deflection under pressure) and inspect outer pulley surfaces for signs of glazing, slip, or engine oil contamination.

   Measure Alternator B+ Terminal Voltage Draw

   Check voltage output directly at the heavy B+ terminal on the back of the alternator. Compare this directly to the battery's positive post voltage. If there is a difference greater than 0.3V, look for corroded joints along the main starter cable shunt.

   Verify Excitation Signal (D+ / IGN Pin)

   Disconnect the small harness connector on the alternator. Turn key switch ON. Check for 12V DC on the excitation wire. Without this starter signal, the internal alternator field coils cannot energize to produce charging current.

• Installing a replacement serpentine belt and automatic belt tensioner bracket
• Cleaning corrosion and re-torquing connections at the master battery disconnect switch
