JLG 600AJ Front-Wheel Drive Steering Drift or Unresponsive Steering

Symptoms

• The steering wheels turn very slowly when the thumb toggle switch is actuated
• Machine wanders or drifts sideways without steering input being initiated
• Wheel steering action only operates in one direction (left or right, not both)
• Hydraulic cylinder drift is visible when driving on sideways slopes or uneven ground

Possible Causes

• Internal bypass leakage around the piston seals of one or both steering cylinders
• Worn steering valve cartridge or sticking spool within the main frame manifold block
• Damaged steering command thumb rocker switch in the platform joystick grip
• Incorrect dynamic pressure setting on the steer system pressure relief cartridge

Diagnostic Procedure

   Perform Steer System Relief Pressure Check

   Install a 3000+ psi pressure gauge on the GP (gauge port) of the main valve block. Actuate steering to full lock in either direction and hold. Verify steer relief pressure builds to approximately 2500-2800 psi.

   Isolate Steering Cylinder Direct Seals (Bypass)

   Disconnect the return hose of a steer cylinder while holding the system in stall. If hydraulic fluid freely flows from the open cylinder port during steering lock, the internal piston seals are blown.

   Test Joystick Steer Command thumb Switch

   Use a multimeter or connect the JLG Analyzer to verify signal changes at the platform board when the thumb toggle is switched. The steer left/right input should dynamically switch between 0 and 12V outputs.

   Inspect and Clean Steer Valve Cartridges

   Unscrew the steer system proportional or directional solenoid valve spool. Check for small paint chips, wire strands, or metal slivers that block the internal metering orifices.

• Resealing the internal packing of the hydraulic steering cylinder
• Replacing the multi-directional steer valve spool cartridge
• Replacing the complete dynamic handle of the platform drive/steer joystick

• Ensure the steering tires are off the ground safely on steel jacks if checking full cylinder lockouts directly
• Wear rated safety glasses to handle pressurized hydraulic fluids
