JLG 600AJ Oscillating Axle Lockout Valve Diagnostics

The oscillating axle lockout system fails to lock when the boom is raised above horizontal, or fails to unlock/float when the boom is fully stowed. This introduces a rollover risk during off-road travel or causes rough, unstable operations.

Symptoms

  • Axle remains rigid or locked on uneven terrain when the boom is fully lowered
  • Axle continues to oscillate/float when the boom is raised and rotated over the side
  • Function speed restricted with 'axle unlocked' sensor error codes displayed on the analyzer

Possible Causes

  • Defective or out-of-calibration boom elevate/telescope limit switches
  • Debris blocking the internal spool or orifices of the lockout manifold valves
  • Failed solenoid coils on the oscillating lockout control valves
  • Seized mechanical axle linkage pivot pins preventing correct movement

Diagnostic Procedure

    Verify Boom Position Limit Switches
    Verify status of boom elevated/extended limit switches. Using a multimeter or analyzer, trace the 12V DC output through the switches when the boom is raised above horizontal. If the switch remains closed, adjust or replace.

    Test Lockout Solenoid Electrical Continuity
    Locate the oscillating lockout manifold between the main frame rails. Unplug the solenoid valve connectors and measure coil resistance with your DMM (should be approximately 7-9 Ohms for a 12V coil).

    Perform Manifold Pressure Overrides
    With the engine running and boom stowed, use the manual override pin on the lockout override valve to verify structural axle movement. The axle should switch between free swing and completely locked states.

    Test side-to-side cylinder bypass. Inspect the lock valves mounted on each oscillating cylinder. Replace sealing cartridges if internal cross-port leakage is observed.
