JLG 600AJ Sluggish or Intermittent Boom Elevator Functions

JLG·600AJ·Deutz D2.9 L4 / GM 3.0L·Advanced·2-3 hours·0 views

Articulating boom lift elevator, tower, jib, or telescope functions are either highly sluggish or completely non-operational. While drive functions maintain full power, the hydraulic boom control loops lack speed, output force, or fail to respond to joystick commands.

Symptoms

  • Slow lift speeds even when the proportional throttle control is fully advanced
  • Boom functions operate normally from ground panel but fail or stutter from platform
  • High pressure pump screams or chatters when elevator functions reach travel limits
  • Platform displays drop back to engine idle speed during commands

Possible Causes

  • Uncalibrated or failed proportional boom speed joystick resolver
  • Sticking or contaminated spool in the main boom proportional control valve bank
  • Worn high-pressure hydraulic piston pump failing to supply dynamic flow commands
  • Malfunctioning load-sensing hydraulic valve or failed main relief cartridge

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. 1
    Perform Main Hydraulic Pressure Tests
Install a 5000 psi analog gauge on the main pressure test fitting 'GP' (gauge port) at the function manifold. Activate a boom function. Output pressure should climb to the specified system relief setting (typically 3000-3200 psi).
  2. 2
Analyze Platform Proportional Joystick Command Outputs
Connect the diagnostic analyzer. Under 'Diagnostics > Joysticks > Boom Lift', verify the joystick command percentage sweeps smoothly from 0% (neutral) to 100% (full throw) without signal dropouts.
  3. 3
    Inspect Proportional Valve Solenoid Resistance
Disconnect electrical leads from the boom function proportional solenoid. Measure structural resistance. A solid 12V coil should be about 5-8 Ohms. Verify no short-to-ground on either terminal pin.
  4. 4
    Check Mechanical Valve Spool Travel
Unscrew the solenoid coil and manually push the dynamic spool pin. If the valve feels gritty, sticky, or fails to spring back immediately, remove assembly, clean out particulates, and inspect internal lands.

Common Repairs

  • Replacement of contaminated or damaged proportional valve cartridge spools
  • Replacement/re-calibration of the platform lift joystick controller
  • Replacing the main pump pilot control regulator

Safety Precautions

  • Lower boom to stowed transport positions before detaching high-pressure hydraulic lines
  • Ensure hydraulic oil storage pressure is fully relieved by cycling the emergency descent valve several times with engine shut off

Required Tools

  • Hydraulic Pressure Gauge Kit (0-5000 psi)
  • JLG Handheld Analyzer
  • Metric Socket and Hex Tool Inserts
  • Non-Chlorinated Parts Degreaser
