JLG 600AJ High Exhaust Backpressure and Deutz EGR Blockage

JLG·600AJ·Deutz D2.9 L4·Advanced·2-3 hours·0 views

The Deutz D2.9 engine starts but lacks structural torque, blows black or blue smoke, and frequently enters high exhaust temperature or soot-accumulation derates. This pattern is commonly linked to structural carbon buildups within the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve or charge-air boost pressure ports.

Symptoms

  • Engine lacks power under heavy climb or dual telescoping hydraulic operations
  • Black soot deposits accumulate rapidly around tailpipe exhaust shroud
  • Continuous warning lamps related to emissions on ground display panels
  • Trouble code SPN 2659 or related EGR flow deviation is stored in memory

Possible Causes

  • Heavy carbon packing internally blocking the sliding gate plate of the EGR valve
  • Defective exhaust manifold pressure sensor (EMPS) or carbon-sealed sensor port
  • Boost pressure sensor reading incorrect intake manifold manifold temperatures
  • Leaking exhaust gaskets causing charge-air and raw EGR gas routing bypass

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. 1
Check Intake Boost and EGR Live Data Parameters
Connect engine scanner. Monitor real-time parameters: EGR position (actuator percentage) and intake manifold boost pressure. Command step increases in engine speed and check for dynamic valve responses.
  2. 2
Remove and Electrically Bench Test EGR Valve
Disconnect the harness and remove the metal EGR assembly. Check for heavy carbon blockages. Apply controlled low-amp current to the actuation pins to confirm the valve moves freely without catching.
  3. 3
Clean Exhaust Manifold Pressure Sensor Port
Remove the Exhaust Manifold Pressure Sensor (EMPS) tube line. Clean carbon buildup out of the metal pipe path using a stiff wire brush and dynamic throttle body cleaning solvent.
  4. 4
    Perform EGR Performance Learning Reset
Following EGR installation, connect the Deutz SerDia software tool. Command an EGR valve adaptation system reset to register new zero and travel scale values on the updated valve.

Common Repairs

  • Replacing the soot-plugged mechanical Deutz EGR Valve assembly
  • Unclogging / cleaning the EMPS tube and replacing the pressure sensor
  • Replacing blown intake charge-air cooler silicone tubes and clamps

Safety Precautions

  • Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely before unbolting any hot EGR pieces or sensors to prevent serious burns
  • Wear dynamic safety respirator mask and eye shield when scraping dry black carbon soot out of valves

Required Tools

  • Deutz Diagnostic Interface Kit
  • Torx Bit Sockets / Allen Wrenches
  • Nylon & Wire Detail Brushes
  • Carbon Dissolving Solvents
