JLG 600AJ Parking Brake Fail-to-Release Diagnostics
JLG·600AJ·Deutz D2.9 L4 / GM 3.0L·Intermediate·2 hours·0 views
The boom lift engine RPM ramps up when drive is commanded, but the wheels remain locked or dragging. This occurs because the spring-applied, hydraulically-released wet disc parking brakes inside the hub assemblies fail to receive adequate hydraulic oil pressure to release the holding force.
Symptoms
- The machine will not move, and hydraulic drive circuits high-pressure relief valves scream when drive joystick is pushed
- Drive functions are sluggish and heat building on drive hubs is noticeable
- Engine lugging down or stalling when trying to travel
- The red parking brake status screen warning/fault is displayed persistently
Possible Causes
- Failed Brake Release Valve coil or blocked spool on the main drive manifold
- Severe wear on the inner wet friction plates causing mechanical welding inside the wheel hub
- Inadequate charge pressure / low pilot fluid supply (below 300 psi) to overcome internal release springs
- Blown internal dynamic piston seal on the brake release cavity inside the Torq-Hub drive gearbox
Diagnostic Procedure
- 1Test Brake Release Manifold Control SignalConnect a multimeter or test light to the brake solenoid valve on the drive manifold. Command travel. Confirm the coil receives full 12V DC signal. If no voltage is present, check ground path and drive interlock controller relays.
- 2Verify Brake Release Pressure LevelInstall a 1000 psi hydraulic pressure gauge to the dedicated 'Brake' test port on the drive hub manifold. Engage drive. The gauge must read at least 320-350 psi. If pressure is low (< 250 psi), structural brake release springs will not fully telescope.
- 3Perform Dynamic Brake Hub Leak-Back TestCap off the supply lines to three of the brake hubs, keeping one hub active. Measure flow slipping from the hub return port during drive activation. Repeat for each individual wheel hub. If a hub bleeds heavily from its release cavity, the inner hub seals are damaged.
- 4Utilize Brake Manual Release Bolt for Mechanical DiagnosticPerform manual mechanical brake release. Thread the manufacturer-provided brake decoupling bolts into the back of each torque hub to mechanically pull the piston back. Run machine. If the lift rolls freely, this confirms the issue is electrical/hydraulic, not mechanical.
Common Repairs
- Replacing the brake release solenoid cartridge or coil
- Resealing worn brake piston cavities inside the dynamic Torq-Hub housings
- Replacing the main pilot charge pressure relief valve on the hydrostatic pump
Safety Precautions
- Only perform manual brake decoupling on a solid, flat concrete workshop floor with tires securely chocked to prevent runaway
- Ensure all brake release bolts are removed and stored back in standard placement before taking the machine back to service
Required Tools
- Hydraulic Pressure Gauge (0-1000 psi)
- Standard Decoupling / Brake Release Bolt Kit
- Digital Multimeter
- Wheel Chocks
