John Deere 325G CTL Track Binding and Final Drive Diagnostic

John Deere·325G·Yanmar 3.3L·Intermediate·3 hours·0 views

The track loader tracks lock, bind intermittently, or generate loud metallic grinding noises from the planetary hub gear area, accompanied by steering wander.

Symptoms

  • Track skips on drive sprocket teeth under heavy traction load
  • Pungent, burnt planetary gear oil smell from hub fill plug
  • Track binding prevents forward movement, though lift arm functions normal

Possible Causes

  • Catastrophic bearing or gear failure inside the planetary final drive hub
  • Seized hydraulic track tensioner grease check cylinder or piston
  • Excessive wear of drive sprockets and track outer steel core guides

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. 1
Inspect Track Sag and Tension System
Elevate CTL frame safely using support blocks. Measure track sag dimension. If track is over-tightened, test the grease check valve release. Constant binding without retracting reveals seized grease tension cylinder piston.
  2. 2
Check Final Drive Fluid Quality and Levels
Park CTL on flat ground. Rotate planetary hub until plug sits at horizontal layout. Remove level plug. Dark, metallic-flake oil implies catastrophic internal gear or roller element bearing failure.
  3. 3
    Conduct Motor Case Drain Test
Uncouple final drive motor case return tube. Loop motor return into test tank. Drive tracks against safety block. Excessive case oil discharge indicates failed pressure seals on the main motor block.
  4. 4
    Measure Drive Pressure Profile
Check loop drive pressures on both left and right sides. Pressures must equalize at approx 5000-5300 psi under travel stall bounds. Significant imbalance pinpoints motor displacement cylinder failure.

Common Repairs

  • Replace final drive planetary hub rebuild kit
  • Install new drive sprockets and high durability track bands
  • Clean, repack, or replace tracks hydraulic recoil grease grease seal cylinder

Safety Precautions

  • Never perform service checks underneath a machine supported solely by hydraulic jacks.
  • Grease inside track tension fittings is under extremely high mechanical compression. Back off check valve slowly.

Required Tools

  • Track sag measurement ruler
  • 10,000 psi hydraulic pressure sensor set
  • Heavy-duty impact socket set
  • Heavy-duty jackstands with pins
