John Deere 85G Excavator Swing Motor Drift Diagnostic

The excavator upper structure drifts continuously when swing controls are returned to neutral, or it lacks rotational holding power when working on side inclines.

Symptoms

  • Upper frame rotates on its own when parked on slopes
  • Delay or jerkiness before swing brake releases on command
  • Metallic clicking noise coming from the swing gearcase

Possible Causes

  • Damaged or leaking mechanical swing brake piston seal

Diagnostic Procedure

    Connect a pressure gauge to the dedicated swing brake release port. Engage swing joystick and confirm pressure immediately jumps above 550 psi to release the multi-disc brake.

    Interchange the port relief valves for left and right swing. If the drift direction reverses or shifts behavior, one of the cross-over relief cartridge seals or springs is damaged.
