John Deere 8320R AutoPowr/IVT Jerking or Slipping Diagnostic

The AutoPowr / Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT) oscillates, jerks during speed changes, or exhibits slippage symptoms under load, often throwing hydrostatic pressure and ratio-monitoring fault codes.

Symptoms

  • Uncontrolled engine surging during acceleration
  • Slipping or loss of drive power under heavy draft loads
  • Transmission fluid temperature rises abnormally fast

Possible Causes

  • Plugged IVT internal pump suction screen or charge filter
  • Faulty hydrostatic module pressure regulating valve
  • Worn internal high/low clutch pack seals

Diagnostic Procedure

    Perform Transmission Oil Pressure and Charge Test
    Install a 0-600 psi pressure gauge to the charge pressure port. Run the engine at rated speed and verify charge pressure is between 320 and 365 psi. If pressure is below spec, check the filter system.

    Drain transmission oil and remove the lower pickup screen housing. Examine the screen for clutch material, brass particles, or silicone sealant debris that restricts flow.

    Using the CommandCenter display, enter the transmission diagnostics section and run the IVT clutch calibration. If calibration aborts with error code, note the specific clutch pack (CL1, CL2) that failed to fill.

    Verify Hydrostatic Loop Pressure
    Attach 10,000 psi transducers to the forward and reverse hydro loop test ports. Monitor pressure differential during slow engagement. Peak pressures should hit system relief settings without rapid, erratic oscillations.

  • Rebuild or replace hydrostatic module control valve body
  • Perform complete transmission oil dump, flush, and filter replacement

  • Chock all tractor wheels and apply parking brake securely.
  • Allow transmission oil to cool below 50C (122F) to prevent high-pressure thermal burns.
  • Wear appropriate face protection when cracking high-pressure hydraulic test fittings.
