John Deere 5075E Utility Tractor No Crank Diagnostic

The key is turned to start position but the engine does not turn over. The starter motor may click once or remain dead, despite lights and instrument panel receiving correct battery voltage.
Symptoms
- Dash icons light up, but turning key produces no physical engine rotation
- Single, sharp metallic click from starter solenoid upon key turn
- Intermittent starter engagement only when wiggling gear selectors
Possible Causes
- Misadjusted or failed neutral start safety switch on range levers
- Corroded main ground strap terminal at the tractor frame block
- Faulty starter relay or starter solenoid coil failure
Diagnostic Procedure
- 1Perform Battery Loaded Voltage TestMeasure battery terminal voltage at rest, then watch gauge during cranking attempt. If voltage drops below 9.6V under load, charge or replace battery.
- 2Test Transmission Range Neutral SwitchLocate the switch on the transmission casing. Set multimeter to ohms, disconnect harness, and measure continuity across switch pins. Ensure continuity exists ONLY when the range lever is in complete physical Neutral.
- 3Check PTO Interlock SwitchVerify continuous circuit through the PTO activation lever switch. If the physical PTO lever is disengaged but the microswitch remains open, the circuit to starter relay remains interrupted.
- 4Measure Starter Solenoid 'S' Terminal SignalConnect test light or DMM to starter solenoid 'S' terminal (small wire input). Turn key to Start position. If 12V is present but starter fails to click, solenoid coil/armature is defective.
