John Deere 6150R Tractor DPF Regeneration Failure Diagnostic

Engine control unit blocks active exhaust soot regeneration cycle. Extreme soot buildup warnings display on dash alongside derate behavior, leading to eventual diagnostic fault shutdowns.

Symptoms

  • Active regeneration does not initiate even when soot loads exceed 80%
  • Black soot exhaust emissions visible or strong unburnt diesel fuel odor
  • Progressive loss of engine maximum output power (Derate Mode)

Possible Causes

  • Blocked exhaust hydrocarbon (HC) dosing injector nozzle
  • Failed DPF differential pressure sensor reporting incorrect restriction load
  • Unresponsive exhaust gas temperature sensors (EGT1, EGT2, EGT3)

Diagnostic Procedure

    Use diagnostic scanner to check temperature values of DOC inlet/outlet sensors at key-on cold-start. Sensors should register equal ambient temp (+/- 5 degrees). Replace skewed temperature sensors.

    Measure DPF Differential Pressure Voltages
    Validate voltage output from delta pressure sensor. Standard clean filter resting output voltage must read 0.5V. Check silicone sensor sensing hoses for cracks, soot clogs, or condensation water trap lines.

    Test Fuel Doser / Hydrocarbon Injector Command
    Actuate exhaust fuel dosing injector nozzle manually using Service ADVISOR. Measure flow spray pattern or check path restriction. A blocked nozzle cannot heat the DOC matrix to the required 550C burn temperature.

    Monitor EGR Valve Positional Control
    Confirm EGR control valve sweeps cleanly from 0% (closed) to 100% (open). If EGR actuator binds open or closed, combustion balance tilts, producing excessive soot and neutralizing active regen cycles.

  • Replace soot exhaust differential pressure sensor module
  • Perform manual off-board/thermal bake cleaning of DPF core

Safety Precautions

  • Be extremely careful of extremely hot exhaust skin temperatures during forced tests.
  • Ensure exhaust tailpipe path is directed far away from dry grasses, paper, or solvents.
