John Deere 8320R Tractor Engine Fan Drive Hydraulics Diagnostic

The hydraulic cooling fan fails to ramp up to peak RPM speed when engine is warm, leading to coolant overheating under heavy draw. Alternatively, it spins at full speed constantly, wasting fuel.

Symptoms

  • Engine coolant and hydraulic temps rise high under load
  • Loud screaming/howling noise from fan blade even at startup
  • Fan rotates extremely slowly or not at all even when engine is hot

Possible Causes

  • Failed proportional control valve solenoid on the fan manifold block
  • Worn internal sealing rings inside hydraulic motor wheel hub
  • Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature sensor sending inaccurate voltage signals

Diagnostic Procedure

    Uncouple the fan motor's dedicated return oil tube and lead into a measure bucket. Run loop. Excessive flow (above 1 GPM) implies internal slippage past motor piston rings, requiring a new motor body.

    Access tractor ECU menu using a diagnostic monitor. Observe the command duty cycle percentage to the fan solenoid. Using a multimeter, check if voltage steadily climbs from 0 to 12V when varying target temps.
