John Deere S680 Combine Hydro Handle Unresponsive Diagnostic

John Deere·S680·PowerTech 13.5L·Advanced·2 hours·1 views

Moving the CommandArm hydrostatic propulsion handle does not drive or reverse the machine, often producing active control controller unit (CCU) display fault codes.

Symptoms

  • Zero propulsion response when pushing the main hydro handle forward
  • Active warning amber or red warning light flashing on CommandArm
  • Road mode functions normal but work field mode unresponsive

Possible Causes

  • Failed electronic multi-axis hall-effect sensor inside the handle housing
  • Damaged CAN-bus communication wire connection to CommandArm panel
  • Faulty hydrostatic displacement control (HDC) valve solenoid

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. 1
    Conduct Controller Diagnostic Address Search
Access diagnostic screen of the GreenStar monitor. Locate CCU Address 011 (Hydro lever position voltage check). Verify lever signal voltage ranges from 0.5V (Reverse) to 4.5V (Forward) with 2.5V dead-center.
  2. 2
Perform CAN-Bus Resistance and Voltage Check
Disconnect CommandArm sub-harness plug. Measure resistance across yellow and green CAN multiplex wires. Verify total loop resistance reads 60 ohms with tractor powered down.
  3. 3
Inspect Propulsion Pump Proportional Solenoid Resistance
Unplug the forward/reverse proportional solenoids directly on the main hydro pump. Measure resistance of both solenoid coils; typical specification should be 10 to 14 ohms at room temperature.
  4. 4
Measure Charge Pressure to Pump Controls
Hook a gauge to the hydrostatic servo charge port. Verify charge pressure hits 350-400 psi. Low charge pressure prevents control chambers from shifting pump swashplates.

Common Repairs

  • Replace multi-function handle assembly
  • Solder and repair harness break underneath CommandArm console
  • Replace hydrostatic displacement control proportional solenoids

Safety Precautions

  • Block tires using wedge blocks of adequate structural size.
  • Ensure combine header is stored completely down on ground support locks.
  • Ensure high-voltage battery isolator switch is off during continuity probe tests.

Required Tools

  • Digital Multimeter (DMM)
  • Deere Service ADVISOR interface
  • Harness repair kit
  • Hydraulic test hose and 600 psi gauge
