JCB JS220 Excavator Boom Drift Diagnostic and Repair

The excavator boom drifts downward significantly when holding a heavy load in suspension, causing the attachment to drop continuously without operator joystick input.

Symptoms

  • Exposed boom cylinder rods retract automatically under load

  • Frequent joystick corrections needed to maintain bucket height
  • Hydraulic oil temperature rises above normal limits during long holding tasks

Possible Causes

Diagnostic Procedure

    Fully extend the boom cylinders. Stop the engine and safely support the boom with thick wood blocks under the arm. Disconnect the main oil lines to the rod and cap ends of one cylinder, and blank them with high-pressure steel plugs. Remove the wood block support. If the boom still drifts, piston seals inside that cylinder are bypassing.

    Check Boom Holding (Anti-Drift) Valve
    Inspect the boom lock anti-drift valve assembly bolted onto the boom cylinder frame or main control block valve. Remove the block lock cartridge spool, clean out any foreign metal chips or rubber dirt, and check for weak seating or a broken internal bias spring.

    Assess Spool Clearance on Main Control Block
    Verify that pilot pressure lines to the main boom control spool drop completely to 0 bar when joysticks are released. If pilot line holds residual pressure, the main control valve spool remains cracked open, permitting continuous fluid drift.

    Conduct Cylinder Barrel Heat Test
    Extend the boom fully with a heavy load. Use an infared thermal imaging sensor to scan the outside surfaces of the cylinder barrel walls. A localized hot heat signature near the piston head area confirms hydraulic fluid is actively driving past worn seals under load.

  • Hone cylinder bores and repack piston seal groups
  • Replace defective boom holding lock valves
  • Replace damaged cylinder rod assemblies

  • Never perform drift assessments without secure mechanical supporting props mounted directly under the loader structure
  • Hydraulic hoses can contain massive static kinetic force; crack connectors slowly in safe direction only
